School's Out for Summer!

Before you head out for your much-deserved summer break, please take a moment to close up your Hazel Health clinic! Keeping Protected Health Information (PHI) and Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications safely locked away is vital. We’ve created this checklist to make it easy.

☀️ SUMMER BREAK CHECKLIST: 

Review OTC medications in your Hazel Cart:

✔️ Find any medications with an expiration date before September 1st

✔️ Send a replenishment request in the General Chat in your Hazel App on the Hazel iPad.

✔️ Store expired medications in the bottom drawer of your Hazel cart until you are ready to dispose of them according to the FDA guidelines

Protect sensitive PHI 

✔️ Store the iPad in the Medication Cart.

✔️ Lock the Medication Cart and store the keys in the Principal’s Office. 

Please note: complete this on the last day of school to ensure students receive care through the final day while keeping sensitive information secure over the summer. 

Note these Medical Cart updates: 

Based on feedback from district health leads and in alignment with the standard of care and current evidence, we are making the following updates to our medical carts:

✔️ Benadryl is being replaced with Zyrtec for allergic reactions. Zyrtec provides effective, longer- lasting relief with a lower risk of sedation and fewer side effects, making it a safer option during the school day.
✔️ Triple antibiotic ointment is being replaced with Bacitracin or another dual antibiotic ointment due to the higher incidence of allergic reactions to neomycin (an active ingredient in Neosporin). Triple antibiotic ointment may continue to be used until current supplies run out.
✔️ Medicated eye drops are being replaced with artificial tears to manage eye irritation more safely. Artificial tears provide effective relief without the risks associated with medicated drops.

Please note: These changes will go into effect next school year.

The Hazel inventory team will ship replacement medication orders this school year if they are placed more than three weeks before the last day of school. Orders placed within the final three weeks will be delivered during the first week of the next school year.
