If you suspect a student is actively at risk of harming themselves or others, please call 911 or 988 to connect with trained mental health crisis support. Hazel Health does not provide emergency services.
Clinical supervisors are available during school hours to provide on demand support to school staff who are supporting a student in crisis. Hazel crisis support is supplementary and not intended to replace school safety plans and protocols.
A crisis consultation may be appropriate when:
- A student is calm but discussing plans of suicide or thoughts of harm to themselves or others while at school
- A student is having a panic attack while at school
- A student is inconsolable while at school
- A school staff member urgently needs a second opinion on de-escalation and next steps from a Mental Health professional
A crisis consultation is not appropriate when:
- A student is partaking in physically aggressive behavior toward themselves or others
- School staff would like to make a student referral for a past crisis incident
- The student is not present with school staff
- School staff would like student to "talk" to someone or have a session
- *School staff is trying to get into a scheduled session or missed a scheduled session
- School staff has questions about the student
- School staff is able to effectively manage the crisis and deescalate the student
During this visit, a Hazel therapist trained in crisis response will provide a recommendation on next steps for the student in collaboration with school staff. The final decision is rendered by the school or district personnel.
A verbal consent or written consent is NOT needed to start a crisis consultation visit. After completing the crisis consultation, a consent form or link to the eConsent should be given to the student or guardian.
If your school's designated private space for teletherapy visits is unavailable and/or another visit is in session during the time of the crisis, consider borrowing the school nurse's iPad and space.
